Thumbs Up & Thumbs Down

March 7, 2012 · 57 comments

Products I love are typically in the spotlight around here. When I find a great item, I obviously want to share it so everyone else can enjoy it as much as I do. I’m brutally honest, and I won’t give rave reviews to something I don’t love.

Now, I’m starting a new series up in here: products deserving of a big thumbs up and products getting a big thumbs down. The good, the bad, and the ugly: Exposed. Dun dun duun.

All you who recommended I recruit a Ninja for my kitchen are my new best friends. I love this guy, and not just for his name.

I snagged my Ninja from Bed Bath and Beyond for only around $40 with a sale and my handy dandy coupon.

I needed a food processor, and I needed a new blender. This seemed like the perfect addition to my kitchen, and it is. I experimented right when I got home.

Any guesses as to what I made? šŸ˜‰

Uh, by the way… they’re not kidding when they say the blades are sharp. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I snagged a hot pink and a cobalt blue colored tank for $13 each (2 for $26) at VS this past weekend, and I’m in love. Vic Secret tanks are perfect for my outrageously long torso. They’re cute, comfy, brightly colored, and won’t break the bank. For me, they’re a great tank for working out or lounging around.

Ugh. I was so excited to try this stuff after snagging it at Harris Teeter a few weeks ago. When my hairdresser puts Moroccan oil in my hair when I get a trim, it leaves it so silky soft and happy.

When I shampoo and condition my hair with this stuff, my hair feels so thin, dry, and straw-like. And that’s while using the free sample of moroccan argan oil that came with the shampoo. I’m contemplating throwing the shampoo and conditioner away – it’s that bad. I’m very against wasting things… if I have the desire to toss something, it means it’s really tragic. I was very disappointed I shelled out a few extra bucks for this.

After a certain dog popped my beloved Bender Ball (sob), I’ve been kind of lost in my abs and core routines. I love the Bender Ball, and I’ve been using it nonstop since I purchased it in college. That trooper lasted me over three years, may he rest in peace.

I perused Bed Bath & Beyond and Dick’s Sporting Goods for a replacement Bender, but neither store carries them anymore. I contacted Bender Ball customer service and couldn’t get in touch with them without an order number. It appears it’s impossible to buy a replacement Bender Ball without buying the entire $40 set with DVDs.

It’s so disappointing to me when a product I love has such poor costumer service.

Dear Leslee Bender, you need to sell the balls separately from your DVDs. And you need a customer service system by which people can contact you without having an order reference number.

Anyway, my fingers are crossed this little blue ball works just as well as the Bender Ball. After reading rave reviews on Amazon, I’m hopeful it fills my Bender void so my abs can feel the burn again.

Hit me: Have you had any great finds recently? Tried any disappointing products?

**P.S. Speaking of products I love, several of the thinkThin giveaway winners never contacted me. If you don’t e-mail me soon at, new winners will be selected!

i had a similiar problem with another scent/type of Organix. I HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATED the way it made my hair feel afterwards. I passed mine on to a friend with much different hair than mine [in terms of texture and such]. Great way not to waste, right? DO IT.

I’ve been avoiding shelling out the money for a Bender ball – curious to see how you like that one from Amazon! I love VS tanks & tees too. šŸ™‚

Are those racer backs moisture wicking at all? Or just cotton? I may get some! I have a really long torso too.

Organix Sucks! I use Moroccan Oil, but I spring the extra cash for this stuff
Organix is even trying to bite off the better stuff’s packaging! Argh! The other stuff works GREAT! my hair is damaged from years of flat ironing, curling, bleaching, and this stuff has been doing wonders for it.

When I have a conditioner I don’t like, I use it as shave lotion!

I got my Bender ball at Target, although I think it works better if I actually work up the motivation to actually use it! I just recently tried cultured coconut milk and it has been an awesome dairy-free replacement for kefir. Gotta love those prebiotics and probiotics!

good to know about the VS tank tops you got… i have an incredibly long torso as well, so i’m always on the lookout for LONG tops.
oh, and i’ll gladly “win” the thinkthin bars. just sayin’. šŸ˜‰

My grandma got me the Ninja for Christmas which obviously earned her some major hip grandma points. The scar on my right index finger can also vouch for the sharp blades. Make sure you put the blade in before you put the food in, duh.

That shampoo did the same thing to my hair, it was horrible!!! SO dry and rough! I was highly disappointed too, but the coconut one in the white bottle was great on my hair!

Its a running joke in my house that we will be putting rocks in our ninja just to dull the blades. I swear, every time I look at the blades I start bleeding! They are insanely sharp!

11 Kate @ ibrokemyumbrella March 7, 2012 at 2:46 pm

Great tips with the tank tops. I’m always looking for good workout tanks, and those are pretty cute. That’s surprising about the Moroccan Oil too. I always see that stuff in the store, and I want to buy it (maybe it’s the super cute packaging). I’m sorry it didn’t work for your hair, but thanks for the review. Now I know to steer clear.

I had the exact same issue with that shampoo! it made my hair feel like straw and almost made it look greasy! so bummed about it.

good to know about the tanks! i too have an abnormally long torso and most tanks are belly shirts on me. grosss.

When I saw that people hadn’t claimed their prizes, I went to the site in hopes I was one of them! Then I remembered that I just started reading your blog and probably never entered. Wow, it’s time for this week to be OVER!

I bought some Arbonne shampoo and conditioner like that. I love their FC5 so I thought I’d try their Shea shampoo that was a holiday special, especially since my hair can get dry and staticky in the winter. Big mistake. I used it for two weeks before I broke down and tossed it. I was so sure I was going to like it that I bought a back-up set… it is still unopened but I don’t have the heart to toss it (yet).

16 Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Munches & Moves March 7, 2012 at 4:19 pm

On Monday, I posted about the TopChips Maker to make microwave chips. It was not a great find, but an AMAZING find it is the best thing that has happened to me in a while. (Don’t know if that is good or just plain sad?!?) I made sweet potato chips and can’t wait to try to make carrot and zucchini and apple chips.

I tried the Organix coconut shampoo and condition because I LOOOVED the smell, but they sucked too! I completed understand what you are saying about it making your hair feel like straw. I’ll stick to my $2 suave professionals, thankyouverymuch!

Great post! Definitely keep us updated on how you like that FitBall. I’ve been thinking about hunting down a Bender Ball of my own…but if the FitBall is just as good, I may reconsider!

18 Talia @ Bite Size Wellness March 7, 2012 at 4:57 pm

You should totally try to return the shampoo and conditioner. I am sure the store will take it back…I hate wasting things too!
I recently tried they Special K chips and give them a thumbs up.

I tried the Oragnix Moroccan Oil Shampoo/Conditioner and HATED it! It left my hair super dry and made my scalp itch like nuts. Moroccan Oil products are not created equal! I hate that the Moroccan Oil Brand products are so pricy!
I’m in the market for a food processor. I’m dreaming of a fancy shmacy Kitchenaid one, but it’s not exactly in the budget these days. I’m gonna look into the Ninja.

I saw a bender ball for $20 a couple of weeks ago at Walgreens in Norfolk. Just a heads up.

23 Erin March 7, 2012 at 8:03 pm

I love that organix shampoo and conditioner! I have really thick dry hair, and it has helped so much. I used the oil, and I noticed a huge difference in my hair! Funny how things work so differently for different people. I do have well water, so maybe that somehow made a difference….

24 kate m. March 7, 2012 at 9:59 pm

so i recently bought some coconut oil to put in my smoothies (…i’m not even sure this is a good thing to eat because it’s pretty much saturated fat that smells good, but people rave about it so i’m giving it a shot, so far i haven’t noticed a big difference) aaand i heard that it’s awesome for hair! i used it as an oil treatment (just coated my hair in the delicious smelling coconut oil & left it in for 2 hours, even 30 minutes will do the trick though) before washing my hair & my hair is SO SOFT and LIGHT and AMAZING now! i LOVE it! you can also use a tiny amount the same way that you would use a serum. highly recommend for hair! maybe not for consumption though, i haven’t decided yet.

25 Meredith March 8, 2012 at 12:04 am

So weird!! I have the organix moroccan oil treatment for my hair that you leave in and my hair has NEVER been so soft! Maybe the shampoo and conditioner are janky…but I promise my hair lahhhvvss this stuff!

26 Anna Leigh March 8, 2012 at 12:29 am

Had the SAME problem with the shampoo/conditioner! Glad to know it wasn’t just me šŸ™‚ Decided pretty quickly to stop being so mean to my tresses and switched back to my old faithful, and then used the Organix in place of shaving cream when I ran out. Not a bad substitute, and a great way to avoid waste.

27 Heather @ Run Eat Play March 8, 2012 at 8:00 am

I want to get a Ninja too. I thought they were more expensive! I might have to make a trip to Bed, Bath, & Beyond.
I have that same Moroccan oil and I only used it a few times before giving up on it. I have super fine hair and it just wasn’t doing it for me.
Good mucking in your quest to find a new bender ball!

I didn’t try the argan shampoo & conditioner, but I do have the oil and I really like it! I mostly like the smell, but I think I like it because it’s kind of mild. When I put really heavy oils and creams in my hair it always lays really heavy and looks greasy. Good luck with your ball!

I’m with you on the Organix. I was really excited when I bought it, but now it just sits in my bathroom. I’ve used it twice and give it two thumbs down! My hair feels really dry and extremely weighed-down. It almost feels like I didn’t bother to rinse it out of my hair.

I love the VS tanks!

I’m glad you like the Ninja! I should have warned you about the blades, my fiance cut himself several times on it :/

36 Krysty March 11, 2012 at 11:29 pm

Sad about the Organix! I LOVE the coconut line. It smells delish, and I lothe coconut anything, normally won’t touch the stuff. You should see if you can return it or exchange it. It made my very coarse curly hair bow to my command. and the Ninja is amazing…totally agree.

TOTALLY 100% AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT THE ORGANIX! I tried the shampoo/conditioner combo with dreams of soft, healthy hair in my head. Sadly, I had the same results as you. I’m back to my regular old “meh” shampoo and conditioner until I can find something I love. Let us know when/if you find a good fit.
